Bolivian President Evo Morales enacted a law to protect Amazon river dolphins (Inia boliviensis), known as bufeo.  The freshwater pink dolphin is in danger from habitat erosion, pollution, mercury contamination, and logging in the river basins.  The law, which was announced Tuesday, September 18, will ban the fishing of the dolphins, encourages programs to protect the species and their habitats, and declares the species a Bolivian national treasure.
