TWS Council met October 11-13, 2012 during the 19th Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. In addition to many discussions Council took the following actions:
Council approved the following three Technical Reviews for publication and distribution: The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, Effects of Bioenergy Production on Wildlife and Wildlife Habitat, and Ungulate Management in the National Parks of the United States and Canada.
Council approved the Climate Change and Wildlife Working Group for official status and approved the formation of the American Public University Student Chapter.
Gary Norman was approved for a second three-year term on Certification Review Board (CRB).
As a cost-cutting measure the CRB will have only one face-to-face meeting per year, to take place during the Annual Conference.
Council approved the request from the 2013 Conference Arrangements Committee (Milwaukee) to give attendees the opportunity to perform a local service activity instead of the usual contribution to a carbon offset project.
Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) to work together to advance wildlife management and conservation. PARC will be hosting a symposium at the 2014 TWS Annual Conference in Pittsburg, PA.
Council selected Raleigh, North Carolina as the site of the 2016 annual conference and reinstated the Student Chapter of Austin Peay State University from suspension.
Council approved a balanced budget for 2013 and allowed the use of up to $300,000 from the Permanent Reserve Fund if necessary to ease cash flow issues.
As a new revenue opportunity to support TWS programs, Council approved recommendations from the Affinity Committee to enter into affinity agreements and to allow affinity partners to display our logo when accompanied by a label stating “proud sponsor of The Wildlife Society.” Affinity partner opportunities will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will require Council approval. No affinity agreement will include product endorsements.
